Weaponized Incompetence (“Faking Bad”)
Weaponized Incompetence, also known as “faking bad,†manifests either unconsciously or through deliberate planning, depending on an individual’s personality style. In the unconscious form, individuals doubt their ability to complete tasks, fearing failure and relying on others due to a perceived inferiority. On the other hand, conscious Weaponized Incompetence, executed by Mindful Takers, involves intentionally evading responsibility by claiming incompetence and passing the task to someone else for personal gain. These strategies can be observed in academic, social, relational, and professional contexts.
The victims of Mindful Takers are typically bright, productive, and healthy individuals. Some find gratification in being relied upon, boosting their egos, while others may find it exhausting. Conscious Weaponized Incompetence types are often labeled as “takers†and “opportunists,†and it’s advisable to avoid them if possible. However, detecting them can be challenging as they are adept at manipulation.
